StoreMend Shopify AI-Readiness: Q3 2026 Cohort
96.3% of Shopify stores serve an llms.txt that Shopify wrote for them. 1.5% block an AI crawler. (StoreMend Shopify AI-Readiness, Q3 2026 cohort, 867 Shopify stores measured 2026-10-12)
Dataset version 2026-10-12.
A second cohort, measured by code
This is a second, separate cut of StoreMend's Shopify research. It covers a different set of Shopify stores from the Q2 2026 edition. The two cohorts share no store, so nothing on this page is a change over time from the Q2 figures. It is a second measurement of the same question: when an AI shopping assistant or a search crawler reads a Shopify store, what does it actually find?
Every figure below comes from code reading the HTML and files each store served on 2026-10-12, before any JavaScript runs. For each store we read the homepage, one product page taken from the store's own product feed, robots.txt and llms.txt. No figure on this page is a model's judgement.
The headline numbers
| Metric | Value | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify stores measured | 867 | live Shopify storefronts on 2026-10-12 |
| Serve the llms.txt Shopify generates | 96.3% | 835 of 867 |
| Serve an llms.txt of their own | 22 stores | out of 867 |
| robots.txt blocks at least one AI crawler | 1.5% | 13 of 867 |
| Product page serves Product JSON-LD | 85.4% | 711 of 833 product pages read |
| Homepage serves Organization JSON-LD | 71.0% | 616 of 867 |
96.3% serve the llms.txt Shopify generates
835 of 867 stores serve an llms.txt file that Shopify generates for the store. It opens with the heading "Agent Instructions" and tells AI agents how to browse and buy from the store. The merchant did not write it, and most merchants have likely never opened it. 22 stores serve a file of their own.
Having an llms.txt says almost nothing about a Shopify store today, because the platform supplies one. Any checklist or grader that scores a Shopify store on whether llms.txt exists is now scoring Shopify, not the merchant.
1.5% block an AI crawler, and 21 stores mention one at all
13 of 867 stores bar at least one named AI crawler, such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot, from the whole site. 21 stores name an AI crawler in robots.txt at all, whether to allow or to block it. A robots.txt with no rule for these crawlers allows them, so for almost every store in the cohort, AI crawlers are free to read the site. Blocking is not what keeps Shopify stores out of AI answers.
85.4% of product pages serve Product schema
711 of the 833 product pages we read serve Product JSON-LD in the HTML. Current Shopify themes generate it from the product record, so most stores have it without anyone deciding to add it. A crawler reading one of these pages gets the product name, price and availability in a form it can parse.
71.0% of homepages serve Organization schema
616 of 867 homepages serve Organization JSON-LD, the block that tells a search engine or an assistant which business the site belongs to. It is the one signal in this cut where more than a quarter of stores have a gap the platform does not close for them.
The per-vertical breakdown
Verticals with at least 50 product pages read. Smaller verticals are in the downloadable data and are directional only.
| Vertical | Stores measured | Product pages read | Product JSON-LD | Homepage Organization JSON-LD |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apparel | 182 | 175 | 88.6% | 68.1% |
| Home | 98 | 97 | 85.6% | 69.4% |
| Beauty | 87 | 84 | 86.9% | 73.6% |
| Food and CPG | 85 | 80 | 87.5% | 70.6% |
The pattern holds in every vertical above the floor. The signals the platform generates are present on most stores, and the gaps that remain sit in what the merchant has to add.

Methodology
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Cohort | Q3 2026, 937 Shopify storefronts listed |
| Stores measured | 867 answered as live Shopify stores |
| Product pages read | 833 |
| Measured on | 2026-10-12 |
| Method | Code reading the HTML and files each store served, before JavaScript runs |
| Pages read per store | homepage, one product page, robots.txt, llms.txt |
| Denominators | 833 for the product-page rate, 867 for every other rate |
The 937 stores were first audited in June and July 2026. They were found through AI search results and app-directory listings, so the cohort leans towards established brands rather than brand-new stores. Of the 937, 46 did not answer the re-check (most were password-protected), 16 are no longer on Shopify, and 8 returned a redirect or error page instead of a storefront.
The product page is the first product in the store's own product feed. An llms.txt counts as Shopify's generated file when it opens with Shopify's "Agent Instructions" heading. An AI crawler counts as blocked when the robots.txt rule group that applies to it disallows the whole site. The crawlers checked are GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, anthropic-ai, Claude-Web, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended.
This edition publishes no figure on review ratings. On the product we sampled, most stores had no reviews yet, so the measurement could not tell a missing rating from a product with nothing to rate.

FAQ
How many Shopify stores are in the Q3 2026 cohort?
937 Shopify storefronts were listed and 867 answered as live Shopify stores when they were measured on 2026-10-12. The product-page rate uses the 833 stores whose product page was read.
Do Shopify stores have an llms.txt file?
Almost all of them do, because Shopify generates one. 835 of 867 stores (96.3%) serve Shopify's generated file, and 22 serve one of their own.
How many Shopify stores block AI crawlers?
13 of 867, or 1.5%, bar at least one named AI crawler from the whole site in robots.txt. A robots.txt with no AI-crawler rule allows them.
What share of Shopify product pages have Product schema?
85.4%, or 711 of 833 product pages read, serve Product JSON-LD in the HTML.
Is this the same set of stores as the Q2 2026 edition?
No. The Q2 2026 edition and this cohort share no store. The two are separate measurements and should not be read as a trend.
