This is version 1 of the Storemend Shopify AI-Readiness Index, a quarterly measurement of how ready Shopify storefronts are to be found and cited by AI shopping assistants. Each quarter Storemend re-audits the same fixed 1,091-store panel and publishes the quarter-over-quarter delta. The panel is locked. The stores measured in Q2 2026 are the exact stores that will be measured in Q3 2026, so every future edition reports the same number moving over time rather than a fresh number in isolation.

The Q3 2026 edition re-audits these exact 1,091 stores to publish the delta. Anyone can audit a set of stores once. The trend line, the same panel measured quarter after quarter from this Q2 2026 baseline, is what this Index exists to build.

The ~140 checks per store cover structured data, AI crawler policy, Open Graph, review surfaces, and rendering behavior on the live public storefront. Percentages use the 1,077 stores classified to a primary cluster as the denominator. The 14-store gap between the 1,091 audited total and the 1,077 classified total reflects stores with no single dominant failure pattern after deduplication. The 1,091 figure is the headline audited count.

When a buyer asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews for a product recommendation, 778 of the 1,077 classified stores fall in the composite AI-shoppability failure tier and cannot be reliably cited. Invisible here is a composite verdict. The store misses enough of the combined structured-data, crawler-policy, and trust surface that AI shopping systems skip over it.

Zero stores hit the full AI-ready bar

0 of 1,091 stores met the full AI-ready standard. Not one storefront in the panel shipped complete Product JSON-LD, an AI crawler policy, and the full trust-signal surface together. The top tier is empty across the entire panel, which means there is no mature reference group to benchmark against yet.

27.8% have partial signal at best

27.8% of classified stores sit in the transitional tier. That is 299 stores carrying partial signal but not enough to clear the full AI-ready bar. Between the invisible tier and the transitional tier, the two lower bands account for every classified store in the dataset.

68.1% ship no Product or Organization JSON-LD

68.1% of classified Shopify stores ship no Product or Organization JSON-LD at all. That is 733 of 1,077 stores with no machine-readable description of what they sell on either the homepage or the product page. This is the single largest pattern in the dataset, and it is the root cause behind the AI-invisibility figure above.

Every named vertical sits between 61% and 74% schema-absent

No named vertical drops below 61% schema-absent. The spread across all seven named verticals runs from 61% (pet) to 74% (beauty). The dominant failure pattern is identical in every category. Only the rate moves, not the pattern, which is the strongest single signal in the dataset.

Beauty carries the highest schema-absent rate at 74%

Beauty leads all named verticals with 126 of 171 stores schema-absent, a 74% rate. Beauty also carries 128 stores in the AI-invisible tier. In a category where buyers increasingly ask AI assistants for product matches, nearly three in four audited beauty stores cannot be read by them.

Pet has the lowest rate at 61%, and it is still a majority

Pet is the cleanest named vertical at 61% schema-absent, and that still means 53 of 87 stores ship no schema. The best-performing category in the dataset has a structured-data gap in more than half its stores. There is no vertical where this is a minority problem.

Apparel is the largest cohort and 67% schema-absent

Apparel is the biggest single vertical at 205 stores, with 138 schema-absent and 143 AI-invisible. As the largest cohort, apparel's 67% rate carries the most weight in the aggregate and tracks closely to the panel-wide figure.

Food and CPG runs 70% schema-absent

102 of 146 food and CPG stores are schema-absent, a 70% rate, with 108 in the AI-invisible tier. For a category where nutrition and dietary-filter queries route through structured data, missing Product JSON-LD removes the store from every filtered AI comparison.

Electronics is 65% schema-absent

70 of 108 electronics stores ship no Product or Organization JSON-LD, a 65% rate, with 76 AI-invisible. Electronics carries one of the lower rates in the dataset and still leaves roughly two in three stores unreadable to shopping assistants.

Home sits at 68%, Supplements at 67%

Home is 68% schema-absent (83 of 122) and Supplements is 67% (31 of 46). Both land near the panel mean. Supplements is flagged directional because its 46-store sample is under the statistical floor, but the direction matches every other vertical.
