Apparel Shopify stores vs the corpus: 205 audited, 138 with no schema, 143 invisible to AI shopping
Apparel is the most-audited vertical in the Storemend corpus. Of the 1,091 Shopify storefronts audited in Q2 2026, 205 sold apparel, more than any other single category. This page compares apparel against the corpus average on the two metrics that decide whether a store gets cited by Google rich results and AI shopping assistants: structured-data presence and AI shoppability.
The short version: apparel tracks just under the corpus average on both. The schema gap is category-wide, not apparel-specific.
Apparel vs the corpus average
| Metric | Apparel | Corpus average |
|---|---|---|
| Storefronts audited | 205 | 1,091 |
| No Product or Organization schema | 138 (67%) | 68.1% (733 of 1,077) |
| Invisible to AI shopping | 143 (70%) | 72.2% |
| Fully AI-ready | 0 | 0 |
Apparel's 67% schema-absent rate sits about one point under the 68.1% corpus average. Its 70% AI-invisible rate sits about two points under the 72.2% corpus average. Slightly better than typical, still two-thirds of the vertical missing the surface entirely.
The apparel numbers that matter
Apparel is the most-audited Shopify vertical. 205 apparel storefronts were audited, the largest single vertical in the 1,091-store corpus. Close to one in five stores in the dataset sells apparel, so the apparel pattern carries the most weight in the corpus averages.
Two-thirds of apparel stores ship no product schema. 138 of 205 apparel storefronts (67%) ship no Product or Organization JSON-LD on the homepage or product page. Without that structured block, Google rich results and AI shopping assistants have nothing to read when a buyer asks for a recommendation.
Seven in ten apparel stores are invisible to AI shopping. 143 of 205 apparel storefronts (70%) fall in the AI-invisible tier. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews cannot cite an invisible store when a shopper asks for the best jacket, dress, or running short in that price band.
Apparel tracks just below the corpus average. Apparel's 67% schema-absent and 70% invisible rates sit 1 to 2 points under the 68.1% and 72.2% corpus averages. The gap is a platform-wide pattern, not a category-specific one, so a vertical-specific tool is not the fix.
Zero apparel stores are fully AI-ready. 0 of 205 apparel storefronts cleared the full AI-ready bar (complete Product JSON-LD, FAQ schema, llms.txt, and a crawler policy). That matches the corpus, where 0 of 1,091 audited stores hit the top tier.
The audit surfaced 7.8 issues per store. 8,409 total findings across 1,091 stores, an average of 7.8 per store from roughly 140 checks each. Schema absence is the single largest cluster in the corpus, ahead of every performance and trust-signal pattern.
Where apparel sits among the eight verticals
Every vertical sits between 61% and 74% schema-absent. Apparel is mid-pack. The percentages below are computed from the audited counts in each vertical.
| Vertical | Audited | No schema | Invisible to AI |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beauty | 171 | 126 (74%) | 128 (75%) |
| Food and CPG | 146 | 102 (70%) | 108 (74%) |
| Home | 122 | 83 (68%) | 88 (72%) |
| Apparel | 205 | 138 (67%) | 143 (70%) |
| Electronics | 108 | 70 (65%) | 76 (70%) |
| Pet | 87 | 53 (61%) | 57 (66%) |
| Supplements* | 46 | 31 (67%) | 33 (72%) |
* Supplements n=46 is below the 50-store statistical floor. Read that row as directional.
Beauty carries the widest gap in this set; pet the narrowest. Apparel lands near the middle on schema-absence and at the corpus median on AI invisibility.
How your apparel store compares
The corpus average is a mirror, not a diagnosis. It says two-thirds of apparel stores are missing the structured-data surface. It does not say which two-thirds, or which pages on a given store leak visibility.
The Storemend audit runs the same deterministic checks used to build this benchmark against one live Shopify store and returns a prioritized fix list in 60 seconds. It reports whether the store ships Product JSON-LD, whether an apparel PDP carries the size, color, and availability fields AI shopping surfaces read, and where the store lands against the 70% apparel invisibility rate. $39 one-time, roughly 140 checks, no subscription, 30-day no-questions refund.

FAQ
How many apparel Shopify stores are invisible to AI shopping? 143 of 205 audited apparel storefronts (70%) fall in the AI-invisible tier, meaning they are functionally invisible to AI shopping surfaces. Those stores cannot be cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews for category recommendations.
How does apparel compare to the overall Shopify corpus? Apparel sits just below the corpus average on both metrics: 67% schema-absent against the 68.1% corpus average, and 70% AI-invisible against the 72.2% corpus average. The apparel pattern is close to the median across all eight audited verticals.
What makes an apparel store invisible to AI shopping? Missing structured data is the biggest single driver, but the two metrics are distinct. The AI-invisible tier (143 of 205, 70%) measures whether a store is functionally invisible to AI shopping surfaces. Schema absence is one contributor: 138 of 205 apparel stores audited (67%) ship no Product or Organization JSON-LD, and a storefront can render perfectly to a human visitor and still be dark to every AI shopping surface, because those surfaces read the structured block, not the visible page.
How do I check my own apparel store?
Open a product page in Chrome, view page source, and search for application/ld+json. Zero matches, or matches that never contain "@type": "Product", means the store is in the schema-absent group. The Storemend audit runs the same check plus roughly 140 others in 60 seconds.

Methodology
Findings draw from 1,091 Shopify storefronts audited between April and June 2026. 205 stores classified as apparel, the largest vertical in the sample. Each store was audited across roughly 140 checks using public storefront pages, the same surface a human visitor sees. Schema-absent means no Product or Organization JSON-LD on the homepage or product page. Invisible means the store fell in the AI-shoppability invisible tier. Percentages in the vertical table are computed from the audited counts. Findings are aggregated and anonymized; no private data was accessed. Dataset version 2026-06-19, refreshed quarterly.
